Why Vitalik Buterin Needs to Lead Now More Than Ever
When Vitalik Buterin wrote the 36 page Ethereum white paper in 2014, his vision for next-generation smart contracts and a decentralized application platform looked extremely promising. The blockchain technology behind Bitcoin showed that the concept of a decentralized digital currency was indeed viable.
However, we are now in a much more perilous time now that Ethereum has had time to mature. Yuga Labs, the creators behind the wildly popular Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT's are trending the Ethereum ecosystem toward centralization as they acquired both Meebits and CryptoPunks last week.
Buterin has said that cryptocurrency isn't meant to be about massive displays of wealth:
The peril is you have these $3 million monkeys and it becomes a different kind of gambling.
In Time Magazine's profile on Buterin, we see early on how he dealt with philosophical differences with his co-founders:
Buterin wanted a decentralized open platform on which anyone could build anything. Others wanted to use the technology to create a business. One idea was to build the crypto equivalent to Google, in which Ethereum would use customer data to sell targeted ads.
Now more than ever the Ethereum ecosystem needs Vitalik's leadership to help maintain the core values that he set out in 2014.
